My mother told me a story before she passed away:
said after my circumcision, she asked if they had
"taken enough"
and the reply was if he'd taken any more, some woman
would be very angry
some day <g>
And will follow that with a TERRIBLE joke -- you have
been WARNED!!
A very wealthy man likes to collect the most exclusive
things.
He goes to the moyel (ritual circumcisor), and says he
wants to order a
suitcase made with leather from the <ummm> results of
the moyel's job. The
moyel agrees, for a very large fee.
Soon, he presents the wealthy man with a package. The
man opens it, and
finds an exquisitely made wallet.
He tells the moyel "But I ordered a suitcase -- this
is a wallet!"
The moyel says, "ahh, but RUB it!"
<groan>

The bris is a sign of a Jew's covenant with G-d --
that is, that G-d has
taken us as His chosen people and we have agreed to
follow His commandments.
(There are 613 of them in the Torah, although some
commandments apply only
to certain specific people, or can only be done at
certain times.)
As long as we follow G-d's commandments, we are richly
rewarded; if we
don't, we are punished. (I can explain about this
more, if you'd like; it's
really not as simplistic as it sounds.)
Anyway, every Jewish male is brought into the covenant
by the Bris
(circumcision.) Jewish women are born into the
covenant automatically and
don't need a bris or ritual to become part of it. One
explanation that I've
heard: It's because we have a special understanding
that we're born with
(called "binah" -- it's a feminine type of wisdom and
spirituality) and we
don't need the sign of the circumcision.
A bris is much easier on a newborn baby than it is on
an older male, so I've
heard.
