IMNSHO the deterrent argument (deterrent) does not work.
Is someone deranged going to say "Wait a minute, if I do this they might
execute me in 20 years?"
Or a person who kills in an act of passion?
Or a drug dealer who sends his "soldiers" to attack a competitor?
OR, a McVeigh who apparently planned and committed an elaborate, deliberate
act of war (and even referred to the children in the day care center as
"collateral damage")?
I don't think so.
So the question comes down to whether it's appropriate to lock up the
murderer, or kill them. That's a matter of considerable controversy. I'm
*NOT* going to get into a flame war on whether it's appropriate or moral to
have state-sponsored executions. In fact I'm going to wimp out and not even
say where I stand on the issue...
