Well! That might be the case in this instance!

But what about the wholesale harvesting of emails! and! storing them for several years!

That's just not Kosher!!
is it!

Ok..I will stop with the exclamation marks hee hee I was just having some fun.

Anyways, sending an email to a public mailing list saying kill the president is stupid.
But email harvesting by Government funded and organised programs such as Echelon
affects PRIVATE corresspondence between
people as well.

Again, if these people were talking on the phone, the government would have to get a
court order to tap those phones, yet a
system such as Echelon can harvest and collect email correspondence at will whether
you are even suspected of a crime or not.

There's something fundamentally flawed with that, and it seems to circumvent current
laws simply because the medium of
communication is different. I think this medium of communication should be bound to
the same laws that affect other
communication, and that includes the laws that prevent the government from
eavesdropping on your conversations without good
suspicion of criminal intent upheld by a judge.

But I have to add again that saying Kill The president in the subject of an email
message on a public mailing list with over
2000 people subscribed, is stupid. ^_^

Kill the president.
*shakes head incredulously*
*snort*

In addition, I'm sure this mailing list is read by people who have .gov or
.mil email addresses in the US and similar addresses outside the US. By
definition, all emails entering the networks of public (governmental)
entities become public domain. In addition, those networks are subject to
tighter national security restrictions.

I'm not sure. But I always remember that what I post to a mailing list
should stand up to the same set of rules I would use when talking to a law
enforcement agent or government employee. Thoughts aren't crimes yet, but
making oral or written threats to a person are. Here in the US it is called
assault.
