the clients we have that keep trying to push PHP down our throats.
(forgive me Sean for using your name, but your posts came out the most
agressively ;) :P)
PHP this, PHP that, PHP has this, how come CF doesn't ...
And I wish Sean would stop assuming we don't know the virtues of CF.
Hell, we are so deep in bed with MM as a solution to our business needs
right now, if they went out of business tomorrow, we'd be up a freaking
creek without a paddle ...
BUT GOSH DARN - MM is NOT - I REPEAT NOT - making it easy when the buy
in is so high!
I don't GIVE A FIG about developments costs. I have ARGUED TO DEATH that
the development costs are lower because we go to production stage
QUICKER with CF - the clients just DO NOT want to hear it.
The other battle - the HIGH cost of server space!!!! I can go our right
now, and find a host for $3 a month that includes MySQL and PHP. Install
phphBB, a PHP chat app, then there's phpMyAdmin for access to the MySQL
db ... FOR $3 DOLLARS A MONTH!!!!!!!!! The lowest CF host I've seen
lately $15.00.
AND don't you people even start with "You get what you pay for." I know
that as well as everyone else - but the mainstream PUBLIC - does not.
They don't give a fig. They want what they want, and if the millions of
PHP evenagelists out there can give it to them for $10 an hour instead
of the $40 or more all us CF people want - then HELL YEAH! The PHP
community is going to be hell bent on presenting a happy go lucky front!
Are we negative? Well we aren't personally, we're already in bed with
MM. We have to be happy. WE push CF and extoll it's virtues until the
blood runs out of noses from our brains exploding. 95% of our business
runs on CF. We several dedicated servers running CF, CF we managed to
get our clients to buy.
But I gotta tell you, no matter how many times they say "the CF usage is
climbing, more and more people are using CF" I still see more jobs in
the other languages for the people who are contracting. And that's where
they get negative.
I think some of the negativity comes from jealousy. The PHP people get a
free server. Their hosting costs are lower. Etc.
The CF channel I'm in on IRC - averages 25 people a day. 5 of those are
bots I think (news, loggers, bots that ensure the channel isn't taken
over) the rest are regulars. People fighting out in the trenches --
trying to make a living contracting CF. OR work for a place that does
use CF. Every once in a while a n00b comes in and asks questions. Very
rarely though.
PHP? 300+
THREE HUNDRED PLUS!!!!!!!!!!!! That's a HUGE FREAKING COMMUNITY!!!!!!
They ARE ALWAYS HOPPING!
Bah - the old CF community is going to die out, because it's easier for
the new people to get started in PHP. They don't have to fight to get
their clients to pay for this and pay for that.
I think some MM people think too "Enterprise" and forget about the
trenches.
That said, I still LOVE AND ADORE CF, MM and will continue to fight my
way through the PHP picket sign people, giving them the finger and
telling them CF can do everything PHP can do!
Negative? Nah ... Not here.
Take this ramble for whatever you want ... I need a drink already.
"Phil!!!.....?"
Cheers,
Erika

So what do you think? Do you think he's right? I would love to bring him
ways in which the CF community is a very positive community.
