I had a co-axal cable splitter from the wall outlet to my TV and cable
modem.  None of the co-axal cables outside the wall were longer then 3 ft.
Although I never noticed poor performance with my cable modem, my cable
reception became poor.
I changed cables just to make sure it wasn't that, but the TV quality was
still poor.

I wasn't able to test with another splitter to see if the splitter was
faulty or if the splitter was causing the problem by weakening the signal.
I also don't know if a weaker signal has any impact on the cable modem.

I recently switched over to DSL.  My cable reception has returned to perfect.
