I have no objection to those who follow the mainstream Christian/Nicene
faith. I have nothing against mainstream Christianity. I out and out dislike
fundamentalists. They are against most of the things in believe in. For
instance, there is a large movement in fundamentalism that aims to stop
public education. Similarly, the Christian right wants to force religion in
the public school, i.e.., teach Creationism as a science. They think nothing
of misrepresentation, and outright lying to force teaching creationism in
science classes, for instance the current push for intelligent design. At
times I've really been tempted to go to one of the local fundie churches
during the service, take over the pulpit and give a short lecture on current
evolutionary theory, on the idea that if they want to teach their religion
in public school, then they should not object to my teaching the theory of
evolution in their church. There is another group who seeks to change the
Constitution to make Christianity (not even Christianity but their own take
on it) the official religion.
Generally my objection is with those who force their belief system on me and
in areas where it does not belong. I have great respect for those real
believers who practice tolerance and acceptance. I have nothing but contempt
for those, like Judge Roy Moore of Alabama, who would impose a Taliban like
theocracy on this nation.
I could rant on for quite a while about this but since its Friday and the
weekend I'd rather not.
