and true religion does not promote war...as Larry mentioned, war comes into
the picture when a governing body wants to force its beliefs on a people.

But as I also see that same mentality on this list..."you don't agree with
what I believe in so off with your head"

Not true.  There is a lot more overlap among the major issues in the major
religions then there is divergence.
Although each of the major religions have emerged pretty much independent
of each other, there is a common theme among all of them.  They exalt
similar virtues (bravery, honoring parents, honesty) while condemning
similar crimes (lying, stealing).  This is a compelling argument that a)
there may be some sort of universal truth and b) that no religion
can/should claim a monopoly on it.

Many scholars believe the true purpose of religion is to share in a
experience or communicate a common experience.
And although I am not a scholar, I too believe this.  This world view on
religion supports your "treat others how you want to be treated." tenet
because we need others to a) derive a shared experience and b) share that
common experience with someone else.

Furthermore, if a little man came down from the moon and said, "You know
what guys, there is no God, there will be no rapture, all of this is a joke
and you can live the way you want to live with no consequence...I would
still practice Christianity becasue I go to bed with a smile on my face, I
have peace in my life, I am happy and full of life and love and I know for a
fact that it is becasue of my faith. I would change a thing.

Religion is the opiate of the masses - Marx and to a lesser degree his side
kick Engles.
