I think religion is necessary because Man has not evolved culturally or
ethically to match his propensity for destruction.

Mankind would be unable as a whole to act ethically without the fear of
a vengeful god or the selfish desire for spiritual achievement. In other
words if people did not think there was an afterlife where what they did
on earth mattered, or did not believe there would be some supernatural
consequence to negatively impacting the lives of others, they would
negatively impact the lives of others far more regularly.

It's quite sad that mankind requires Religion in order to behave
ethically. To me it proves we really haven't moved that far along in the
thousands of years we've been on the planet.

You can also take a functionalist view of religion - it serves as a
supporting and reinforcing role to society and helps to preserve and
advance
social mores and folkways. Looking at it that way, religious
institutions
help societies survive and grow by actively reinforcing prosocial
behaviors
and belief patterns.
