If it does not have anything to do with marriage, then civil unions would
apply to any two people living together.
Right?

Im not 100% clear on this, are gay civil unions given all the same
protections and rights, legally, as a married couple?
In the only state that currently allows "civil unions" Vermont. Nope, not
yet. They can get a piece of paper from the state saying "Civil Union" on
it for pride sake, but there are not yet any enforcement giving that status
the same rights that the status of "Married" has.
