Umm... yes. It's true you don't have to disclose your race to a
mailing list, however, internet mediums like mailing lists are the
exception, not the rule. The rule is that people know. Interactions on
the internet offer you an opportunity to at least attempt to conceal
that from certain people if you want.
I only mention this because I find it interesting how many of us
programmers (likely myself included) tend to forget that the rules of
online interaction are a rare exception to the rules of general social
interaction, and so typically don't apply with regard to conversations
about discrimination, etc.
