made for trying the low-tech approaches first. In some cases the HMO
actively penalizes a general practitioner for referrals to
specialists.
I do however believe that there are elements of discrimination.
Although I would have to bow to Monique on discrimination against
blacks, I can tell plenty of stories about discrimination against
women.
I remember once being referred to a cardiologist who said rather
dismissively that "women don't get heart problems." I told him I
wanted a second opinion. He then produced some actual facts to back up
his opinion that I did not have heart problems, which I found
convincing. So I did not pursue the matter. But a study a few years
later found the attitude to be quite prevalent. And wrong.
I have vented before about doctors who treated my previous problems
with fatigue with antidepressants. This did not work very well, but
the first impulse was always to increase the dosage. Come to find out,
years later, that there was a medical problem which could utimately
have been fatal. I am being treated with interferon and it is working.
But this does make me wonder if doctors are as quick to tell men not
to worry their pretty little heads about their symptoms. I have an
aunt who died of ovarian cancer, in my opinion in large part because
she was a "nice" woman who did not confront her doctor...
I am dangerously close to climbing back on a soapbox over this, one of
my pet peeves. What I have learned is to question the easy diagnosis,
especially if it appears to not be working. Perhaps this is
particularly hard for certain groups? Women? Blacks? Immigrants?
