believe the common interpretation of all that is that the power of the
ring brings about this darker 2nd personality in its victims -- as
time passes that personality becomes more overt and dominant. Smeagle,
although supposedly hobbit-like if not a hobbit was particularly
weak-willed (or the ring was much stronger at the time) and couldn't
retain control in the struggle for dominance between his normally
peaceful personality and the evil gollum personality, so actually
Gollum killed Smeagle's fishing buddy.
