Smoked for 6 years.  Quit for two.  Got back into it for another 2 years, and 
then quit again back in April.  Both times cold turkey.  My gf quit in May,  
cold turkey as well, after 6 years.

When I smoked, I usually smoked anywhere from 1 to 4 times an hour - 1 per at 
work, 4 per on my own time.  Sounds silly enough, but what helped me was 
anytime I 'needed' to smoke, to tell myself that I just finished one, and 
that I could wait another hour.  Over and over...  Hehe.  *shrugs*  Something 
worked...
