I've had audiophile friends that swear that they could hear "problems" even
in high quality lossy rips (192kb MP3 for example) and demanded "lossless"
digital recordings.

Honestly I must have a tin ear because I hear very little difference between
a 96kb WMA and the original CD. ;^)

MP3 is probably the best format if you don't know what you'll be doing with
things. Nearly anything that plays digital music plays MP3 and seemingly
all the companies (like Apple and Sony) that are pushing proprietary formats
also allow MP3s.

As far as MP3 goes however for best flexibility you'll want to still with a
"standard" CBR rip like 128kb for greatest compatibility. Some devices have
problems with higher or otherwise "odd" bit rates and many devices
(especially older ones) have problems with VBR files.

WMA is a close-to-middling second choice: your options are definitely more
limited, but there are generally at least a few devices of each class that
plays them (DVD players, portable players, car stereos, etc). The big win
is that WMA file are about half the size of MP3s for the same quality (but
with your 120 Gig drive that won't make a difference).

In my opinion all other formats are proprietary or so damn close as to make
no odds. You can generally play them only on the device you bought that
used them and, if you're lucky, on the PC as well.

Katamari Damacy just keeps growing on me. I've still not completed the
"Moon" level or most of the constellations (I promised my son I wouldn't
play without him... it's so hard to keep that promise!) but I find myself
walking to work thinking: I'd probably have to collect all of those parking
meters before I could get that lamppost. ;^)

I also announced in a meeting today "I feel it! I feel the cosmos!"
Slightly embarrassing, but I think my co-workers are getting used to my
obsessions.

That is the huge issue for me. I don't know what devices I will be
playing them on. I went back and listened some mp3s and decided that
the quality is good enough and it gives me the greatest options.

I just ripped about 10 CDs in Apple Lossless Enconder and it took 3.5
gigs! No good. I should have copied my CDs over awhile ago. I can't
stand having junk.

PS I bought Katamari Damacy today. I played for about 10 minutes and
love it. Really over the top and fun game play. Can't wait till
introduce the game to my friends.
