Apple Itunes:

I just wanted to give everyone a heads up about ITunes. I used it to
rip some of my CDs. Ripping it with the Apple Lossless Encoder yields
very good digital copies. I'm finding the MP3 encoder to be a bit
substandard. At first I thought my CD was just stracthed. But after
the 4th CD had problems I decided to try with both formats.

To add to Jim's point, In 1997-1998 I asked several classically trained
muscians to listen to mp3s and they could all notice audio loss. They
could not notice any quality loss for MiniDisk. I actually decided to
go with MiniDisk instead of mp3 because of this. Talk about getting on
the wrong boat.
