This could be a complete coincidence. I've had lots of acquaintances that've said they're widowed (when questioned about their rings) and gone to extraordinary lengths and lies for an affair. To my knowledge none of their wives has turned up dead. Further, Mr. Peterson may not have wanted to be married anymore and considered he disappearance a good thing. He may have said the "settle down" bit to try to smooth things over in hopes of another trist. None of this behavior is honorable, but neither does it make him a killer.
