Years ago I flew out of what was then considered the new Tokyo airport.
Farmers were upset that farmland had been used and would occassionaly launch a
homemade rocket at a plane or someother usually ill conceived plan to attack
the airport. Everyone was required to take a bus into the airport. The bus
passed through a formidable gate. It stopped. Everyone got out, was checked
(tickets, carry-ons, passports etc..) while this was happening the buses were
checked with dogs and electronics. We then boarded the buses again went
through another formidable gate the buses stopped at each airline terminal .
You disembarked at the proper terminal then went through another screening.
Bags where opened, electronically checked for explosives closed, sealed and
then put on the conveyor. Individuals then went through customs, and another
metal detector before being allowed into the boarding area.

A pain, yes, but it didn't really take that long especially when you consider
you have to be at the airport an hour - two hours before flights now anyways.
Besides when was the last time you heard of a Japanese airliner being hijacked?
