A controversial election with a fascist forcing his way into office.  That 
sounds vaguely familiar. 


Hmm, interesting. Was perusing this wiki entry:

Especially the part subtitled "The Collapse of the Weimar Republic and the 
Rise of Hitler".  Looks like two elections were held trying to establish a 
clear majority in the Reichstag. The NSDAP was voted the majority, at which 
time Hitler demanded to be "appointed" chancellor.

Not quite the same as casting a direct ballot for or against a 
person......but it seems his party at least did win a popular election.
