ow ow .. my poor feet. I never knew I could stand up in front of people and
talk for 4 hours. Well, I knew I could, I just never thought I would.
Thanks again for that info Eri*K*a. Using that, we got all the way through
the SQL stuff and I was able to give an example of <cfquery> and
<cfoutput>ing that query. That's really something, considering 1/2 of them
didn't know anything about databases and none of them knew anything about
SQL. We even covered basic normalization and primary and foreign keys.
They even (eventually) came up with the correct query to gather information
from 2 seperate tables using a key join without me even telling them how to
do it. They came up with:
SELECT s.name, class.name AS class_name
FROM student s, class
WHERE s.id = 1
AND s.class = class.id
I know it doesn't look like much, but not only did they get the query right,
but they managed to toss in 2 types of aliasing as well. Pretty smart
group, considering this was the only joining query they have ever seen
before hehe.
I'm sure I lost one and maybe another, but I'm expecting the rest will be
back tomorrow. It was so funny watching their eyes light up when they put 2
and 2 together and began to realise the possibilities of this cool new stuff
they were being shown. I remember having the same feeling when I first
started with CF way back when. They were fascinated by the GROUP BY
followed by an ORDER BY. hehe
Still, it *was* information overload. Let's see how much they remember
tomorrow evening. I think I will start them off with 3 tables (I'll make 2
contain seperate data and make the 3rd be a joining table) and tell them
what I want from it and make them come up with the query. Am I mean or
what? >=-)
Oh .. one thing if I may ... Our database guru said you might want to
include a brief mention on the "HAVING" clause since you talk about
aggregate functions :)
geez. I'm so shy .. I still can't believe I suggested this, let alone
volunteered for it, but I'm excited after the progress we made today. One
of them even *asked* for homework Let's hope I can keep this up for 7 - 9
more days, heh.
Hmmm .. maybe after this, I should go for my Certified CF Instructor thingy
