It depends - I've lived in both. A ranch has no stairs to speak of so moving things around (including yourself if that's an issue) is much easier. It's also easier to do things like wiring and plumbing (at least if there's a basement or a crawlspace). But, in general, a two story house with the same square footage will have a smaller foot print (making more land for a yard on a lot) and is often at least slightly easier/cheaper to heat and cool.
