True - but in many cases families have been able to challenge such documents when such power is left to a homosexual partner. There is definitely a double standard at play (although the degree can rest on where you are in the US). We went through this with my mother-in-laws partner. She wants to leave her house to her grandkids (namely my children) but found it difficult to set up the will as "blood" relatives could protest - she had to make her will much more complex because of it. > Now for tax breaks. I'm not aware of any tax breaks for getting married. > My > wife and I will have to pay more in taxes now that we are married. In my case we pay less... but my wife doesn't work and I can claim her as a spousal dependent. I couldn't do that in most states with my homosexual partner. There are also certain state programs such as first time mortgage programs and such which favor married couples. Then there are all the "little things" in life like "next of kin" and health insurance and so forth where it's often more difficult to get benefits for a same-sex partner than a spouse. We've built a society where marriage certainly does offer benefits.
