Please enlighten me on how it could have been done cheaper?  All of my
friends over there right now are commenting on how light casualties are
against projections.

Good point.  I would also add that given that you're willing to risk
the lives and money necessary, could we have done this better such we
would've used less money and cost fewer lives?

I think the answer there is a big "yes"!

In many ways this could turn out to be like the fumbled ball that
results in a last minute winning touchdown when the team was going for
FG position:

1.) The game strategy was flawed since a last minute score is needed to
win.
2.) The play call and ensuing execution was poor, thus the fumble.
3.) But, due to outside factors, an acceptable outcome was still
attained.
