I can second Ian's remarks about Sacramento's Light Rail system. It is limited
and slow. The bus system is extremely unreliable.

I lived in san Francisco for about two years and relied heavily on BART and
MUNI, I can only hope for the day Sacramento's mass transit system reaches the
level of the Bay area.

I also rode Amtrak's commuter train from Sacramento to San Francisco on a
regular basis for a couple of years. The ride from Sacramento to San Francisco
was usually on time for both departure and arrival. The return trip from san
Francisco to Sacramento was late by at least 20 minutes 3 - 4 times a week with
a delay of an hour or more at least once a week.

I've only got personal experience with DC and Sacramento, CA Metro systems.

For the two and 1/2 summers I spent in DC during my college years, I only had
to use a car like twice. My parents lived about 5 blocks from the end of the
Yellow line. With my hobby of genealogy, this was great. Walk to the station,
hop on the train, ride to the other end, cross the street and enter the
National Archives.

Here in Sacramento, the train is ok except for it's somewhat limited reach into
the surrounding communities. They are slowly improving this. Unfortnatly, I
just can't convince myself to use it daily. Trippling my round trip commute
time from ~40 minutes to ~2 hours. That just cuts so deeply into my family
time before the boys go to bed.
