I second this.  The Boston T is great - although admittedly old (in fact it was 
the first system in America).  The history of the area is clear in the stations 
- you can spend a whole day just reading the plaques and exhibits on the Red 
line.

Due to the age many of the stations are less than accessible and others are 
dirty/rusty/decomposing.  But for sheer ease of use and character the Boston T 
rocks.  Many of the oldest stations are being completely rebuilt over the next 
few years.

Of course that might also be because it's so small compared to many other 
systems.  I was amazed the first time I took the Chicago MTA downtown - nearly 
an hour on a single train!  ;^)

Personally I found the DC system confusing when I was at DevCon, but I'm sure 
it could grow on you.
