Here is the situation...

A client hired me to do some web development, which included purchasing a
domain for them and providing hosting for a year.

I registered the domain. I'm listed as the technical contact; they are
listed as the administrative contact.

The client decided to terminate our contract and move the site
elsewhere. That's perfectly within their rights, so I have no problems
with that. I'd like to get the domain off my account if I'm no longer
contracted to manage the domain and provide hosting. But, I didn't have
much luck explaining to them that someone other than me is going to have to
take control over the domain.

They just want me to change the DNS that it point to, and I offered to do
that. But it's just a temporary fix.

As the administrative contract they should be able to move the domain
anywhere w/o me being involved. How do they do that (without access to my
personal GoDaddy account)?

Hosting companies must deal with this sort of thing all the time, I assume.

How do I explain this to them?
