You're making the same mistake Dr. Atkins made and grouping all the carbs together. Complex carbs are good and very important. Your body has to process it and then distributes the sugar over time, as it's ready. A steady supply of fuel through the day. Simple carbs are processed junk food with all nutrients removed. Since simple carbs are an empty food, no processing required by your digestive system, it becomes an instant sugar causing sugar rushes. This is why diabetes is on the rise, by putting your body through sugar rushes so often your body will eventually loose the ability to regulate insulin.
The South Beach diet is trying to correct this misinformation but since the first two weeks you eliminate carbs, people assume it's a low carb diet. It's not it's a no simple carb diet. If you eat high fiber and whole grains then you're eating complex carbs. Just stay away from the Twinkies, white breads and anything loaded with sugar. Actually trying to avoid anything that uses bleached flour is a good place to start. It's work but eating healthy always is.
