Gruss

Did I not say just yesterday that it would be impossible to say with
scientific certitude whether he was or not? It's an opinion which I
have said is an opinion and I really don't know why it bothers you so
much :)

I also think that Michael Jackson is guilty, John Paul II was a good
man and hey, I'd just as soon save the whales, thank you. I
furthermore think that it would be a mistake to invade Iraq, that
retirement accounts are a good idea and dreamweaver is not worth the
effort. I think cats are smarter than dogs and that my kids are both
intelligent and goodlooking.

These are opinions.

But back to Schiavo... ya. I certainly wouldn't want him as caretaker
for anyone I cared about. Can I prove he was abusive? No, and I said
so lo these many moons ago. Do I think he is? Yes, and that's based on
actually reading some of the material out there as well as watching
two women I knew pretty well go through something of the kind.

Can I convince someone of this who really seems to have some sort of
stake in believing otherwise? Probably not.

If we really really care about this we can now look into the
allegations received by the DCF, as the judge has apparently oredered
the records released. And thus the question of 30 vs 89 may at last be
resolved :)

Just to pre-empt another round of confusion - abuse at the hospice in
the last few years is a separate issue from whether the marriage was
originally abusive or whether her injuries where caused by her
husband. Or at least it is in my mind.

Anyway, here's a link on the release of records.

Media gets access to Schiavo records

April 15, 2005 | CLEARWATER, Fla. (AP) -- A judge has ordered state
officials to release summaries of their investigations into the
treatment of Terri Schiavo, the severely brain-damaged woman who died
last month after her feeding tube was removed.

Pinellas Circuit Judge George Greer gave the state Department of
Children and Families until Monday to release the records on dozens of
investigations into complaints that Schiavo was mistreated. None of
the allegations were substantiated.

The death of Schiavo, 41, ended a gut-wrenching court battle between
her husband and parents over whether she would have wanted to live in
a vegetative state.

"The public interest includes the need for citizens to know of and
adequately evaluate the actions of DCF and the court system in
providing vulnerable adults with the protections provided" under state
law, Greer wrote Thursday.

The agency, which had objected to releasing the records, will comply
with the order, DCF chief of staff Bill Spann said.

The repeated allegations of abuse were based partly on bone scans
showing Terri Schiavo suffered fractures and statements she made to
family and friends that she was unhappy in her marriage.

Schiavo's husband, Michael, has denied harming his wife. His lawyer
said the fractures resulted from osteoporosis caused by the woman's
years of immobility and complications of her medication.

Lawyers for Schiavo's husband welcomed Thursday's ruling. Release of
the records "will be helpful for all concerned to evaluate the
frivolity of the continuing investigation," attorney Hamden Baskin III
said.

There was no immediate response to a message left early Friday for
attorneys for Schiavo's parents, Bob and Mary Schindler.
