But without knowing what this friend would get driving a hybrid, we can't make 
a comparison, too many variables.

As of last night, after 5 days, I'm getting a city average of 50mpg and the 
average is still climbing.  I haven't done a highway test yet, we will be going 
to Idaho from Northern California in July, we will see then.  I'm going to try 
and keep a record over time to see how I'm doing.

I expect the price of gas to only climb, with fits and bumps, over the next 
decade or two, so even an improvement of a few MPG can add up over the years.

But I agree these are the first round of, generally accepted by Americans, 
"green" vehicles.  I expect we will see much more competition and variety in 
this soon.  And IMHO that is a good thing.
