I'll agree with you, but until recently we haven't had to worry about land
size. We just built up, because we could. In countries where people are
still living in 500 year old houses, it is much harder to do that. They
can't up and move the city center if they wanted to. Many towns in the US
could, and have. Lexington, KY pretty much moved its downtown so they could
build up a little.

Oh and 5% raise, hell I'd love a raise period.

Ok, I'll give you shelter, but our shelter sizes are not needed. When
I was visiting England this past summer, some of the people asked me
about my home. I told them that is was 3200 sq feet. Then they asked
how many people lived in it. I told them five. Then they'd ask "What
do you do with the rest of the space". We could learn a lot from our
European friends. Afterall, I talked with a lot of people there that
hadn't ever driven a car. They didn't " all chose to live in a hole
or something".

I'm just saying that we as Americans have come to expect a certain
level of comfort in everything. We've come to expect that a family
car should have over 250hp. We've come to expect that gas will always
be cheap and plentiful. We've come to expect meals in under 15
minutes. We've come to expect a 5% raise every year from our
employers. Someday those expectations will come crashing down around
us.

And, for the record....I drive ~100 miles back and forth to work
everyday. I wish I could ride my bike, but the irony is that I carry
it on the back of my truck so that I can use it for exercise during
lunch because I don't have enough time at home since I spend 8~9 hours
at work and 2 hours in the car each day and then spend each evening
doing various extra-curricular activities with my daughters. I've
fallen hook line and sinker for this crazy American dream.
