Believe it or not, getting a job at McDonalds is _incredibly_ difficult if you don't have a shower. Shelters where homeless people can get cleaned up and get into a job tend to be overcrowded and don't allow people to stay long enough to reasonably get out on their own on a min. wage job. I'm not saying it's impossible, but when you're homeless, the odds really _are_ stacked heavily against you. Generally speaking if a McDonalds manager can hire one of a dozen teenagers or a homeless guy, they'll hire one of the teenagers. One or two of them are able to beat the odds, but by no means does that mean it's possible for _all_ of them to beat those same odds. I've never been homeless and although I don't have a college degree I consider myself reasonably bright and have years of experience in a profession that's "in demand", and when I'm out of work I still have a tough time finding a job. I can only imagine what it's like for someone who has to sleep in an alley because the shelters are full and no-one will let them sleep on a park-bench.
