OUCH!!! Under the concept of 7 degrees of separation; I was only 2 degrees separated from Christa McAuliffe. The back up teacher in space, Barbara Morgan, was an elementary teacher in my high school home town, McCall Idaho [http://www.jsc.nasa.gov/Bios/htmlbios/morgan.html]. Her husband, Clay Morgan, was a co-worker of my father. The McCall-Donnelly school district had two school buildings. The main one in McCall housed the k-6 and 9-12 grades. Seventh and eighth graders where shipped 30 miles down the road to Donnelly.
Anyway, I was a senior that year, and since Mrs. Morgan was the backup, our grade school and a direct satellite feed to mission control for that launch. The seniors were pressed into duty to deal with shell shocked eight, nine and ten year olds until their parents could arrive. This is a memory that I will always have. PS. I see a lot of information on the internet that Barbara Morgan was scheduled to go to the International Space Station, last year.
