I, too, grew up in the country. It was nothing to have us kids driving
the old Chevy pickup around the back-roads. I think I was around 10-11
when my dad would let me drive the truck with him sitting next to me.
Around 12-13 I was driving with him sitting in the passenger seat.
Around 14, I was driving myself to work at a nearby farm.

All that time, it was on backroads (half of them paved, half of them
gravel) so I never got on the highway and risked any accidents. I did,
however, gain a lot of driving experience in those years before I got my
license.

I learned how to slide around a gravel road s-curve or intersection
without slowing down much. I learned how to raise a good amount of dust
to create a huge "smoke-screen" behid me.

This is the real-life experiences that they don't teach you in driver's
education.

Hm. Weird. I got my license on my 16th birthday and drove myself to
school the next day. But, I grew up in the country - we all got our
license's ASAP and driving was a necessity.

I did get into 2 accidents before I was 17 - but neither was my fault
- one was a truck that blew a stop sign and broadsided me and the other
was a 6 year old that ran out onto a highway from behind a snow bank.

My parents made me get right back in the car after both accidents. In
fact, after the broadsided one (the car was totalled), I got in a
different car and drove myself to work - and ended up being only a
couple of hours late.
