I used to tune my dad's 240-Z when I was 12-13 and he was in the hospital
with cancer. 4-speed stick geared for speed, twin SU carbs, inline 6. Hot
little thing. I learned to drive in it on my own a little from 12 until I
shipped off to military school at 14 (mom working, dad in hospital, older
siblings either moved out or away in college, lenient suburban police).

After my dad died, my mom traded up to a brand new red 280-Z, and she and I
tricked it out. On leave from military school I would take it out for a
spin every now and then when she wasn't looking.

In military school I took drivers ed and got some decent road experience.
As soon as I graduated military school, I was off to formula racing school
in Canada, where I finally found my "happy place." I learned things about
driving I didn't even know existed, and the techniques would later come in
handy on the street.

Bought the car from my mother and drove the living hell out of it for 17
years. I put a lot into that little thing, and I sure as hell took a lot
out of it, too. In the end I traded it to a friend of mine for $200 store
credit at his electronic components store.

To date, I've never been in a chargable accident. Always got rear ended at
a stop sign, bumped from behind in stop-and-go traffic -- stuff like that.
Racing school made me a better and safer driver, that's for sure. And
learning it near the very beginning of my driving experience was good, too,
because I didn't have to unlearn any bad habits.

Now I'm an old fart driving a Crown Victoria with an automatic transmission.
Fmphfff!
