I'm not making the definition up out of thin air... I'm using the
generally accepted definitions.

>From dictionary.com:

drug Audio pronunciation of "drug" ( P ) Pronunciation Key (drg)
n.

   1.
         1. A substance used in the diagnosis, treatment, or
prevention of a disease or as a component of a medication.
         2. Such a substance as recognized or defined by the U.S.
Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act.
   2. A chemical substance, such as a narcotic or hallucinogen, that
affects the central nervous system, causing changes in behavior and
often addiction.
   3. Obsolete. A chemical or dye.

None of these seem to include the definition he's looking for. What
text book are you using? Since alcohol isn't used to treat illness it
doesn't qualify as a drug under definition 1. Both sugar and chocolate
affect a person's mental state (behavior) and people have been
identified as being addicted to them, which means they both do qualify
under definition 2 (it doesn't have to be a narcotic or hallucinogen,
those are examples, not an exhaustive list).

People don't think they're addicted to sugar of course, because
everyone eats it -- constantly -- and nobody thinks anything of it...
Then they give up sugar and they experience withdrawl ... so... you
may just as well say that before all the anti-smoking stuff that
nicotine was not a drug because everybody was smoking. I'm sure the
tobacco companies would have agreed with you.

Chocolate specifically produces the same chemical response in the
brain that is produced following sex. Does a blow-job not alter your
mood? I'd call that a mood alterant.

The definition he's looking for is either "I don't like alcohol,
therefore it is a drug" or "I've always been told alcohol is a drug,
therefore the definition of 'drug' must include alcohol". Neither of
which fly.
