I don't think it's quite that, I think it's that they have no choice. 
It's kind of like the kid who tells his buddies the ice is plenty
thick to walk on.  Once reaches the middle and falls through, he has
no choice but to swim; it's too late to worry about the best way to
make it off of the lake.

What's happened is that Mr. Bush picked the wrong civilians to run the
war.  Their goals and expectations were almost incompetent and they've
been told so ever since Iraq came up.  First by Sec. Powell, then by
Gen Shinseki, and then by millions of others.

Now everything they've been told has come true, however we're there
and we can't just pull our troops out.  I'm not even sure there is an
exit strategy without a massive influx of troops from America or
elsewhere.

Iraq will end up being like buying a 1954 Mercedes Benz 300SL Gullwing
to run to the grocery store with.  Yeah, it's nice, but you could've
done the same thing for billions less and with < 1% of the maintenance
costs.
