Yes and in both cases the reason those things came about was because
they would be "equal". That's what everybody said. That's what white
people DEMANDED. That they "be equal", hence the term "separate but
equal", and of course the end result is that it gives white people an
easy way to continue to discriminate against black people because that
word "black" is on their water fountain. But it's equal! That's what
people said! That's what (white) people demanded! They're all very
equal... just some people are more equal than others... and now the
civil union people want to say "this time it will be different! They
will have equal rights!" They're DEMANDING it. And why? It's just a
word right? Why is it so important to the other side, if it's just a
word? And the answer is for the same reason it was so imortant to
white people that there be "equal" black toilets, so that white/het
people can continue to discriminate against black/gay people. They
won't have the same rights -- civil union supporters will make sure of
it. That's the reason they push so hard for civil unions. Cow-towing
to their telling us "this time it will be different" only lets them
continue to discriminate longer. They know that and it's the only
reason they so persistently push their empty promises at the rest of
the population. It was a thinly veiled lie over a ham-fisted agenda
then, it's a thinly veiled lie over a ham-fisted agenda now.
