You know, I hear people bitching about HMO's all the time. But, honestly, I've been really happy with ours. Maybe we're just lucky. But, I can see anyone in the same facility without a referral. I can get in to see _someone_ in my doc's office within 24 hours, we have a 24 hour nurse on-call phone number, and I've never been turned down for anything.
Case in point - a friend just brought her newborn in to urgent care on Sunday. They brought in an on-call peditrician. Everyone agreed that something was wrong, but they weren't sure what. So, rather than take any chances, they admitted her to the hospital and started her on antibiotics and continued testing from there. This is all through the same HMO as mine, and this won't cost them a single cent. I think that's pretty good service. (BTW, the baby is responding to antibiotics.)
