The standard reply here is: "Which country?" ;-)

(Garth Brooks is mega-corp pop music, with a different clothing style,
and different enunciation patterns, than other brands in their portfolio.
(During the first two decades of the last century, field-recording
units found small but profitable markets among various US immigrant
group for "home music", as well as for (the sometimes derogatory)
"hillbilly music" which represented rural ex-pats in urban migration.
Those musics which were actually part of a social fabric, where
producers and consumers meshed, have a lot more interest for me than
what happened after Alan Freed, the Beatles, and other marketers
synthesized popularity.)

If I had a 20G iPod for the desert island, it would include Lefty
Frizell's "Songs of Jimmie Rodgers", the Bob Wills Tiffany
Transcriptions, and Hank Williams (sans Audrey, natch). But I'd also
want "Songs of the Crooked Dance", Matteo Casserino and Conjunto Bernal,
as well as some city music like Rio's choro or Parisian valse mineurs.
And then there's Kansas City during Prohibition, and all the great
players who came through there... that's "country music" too, when you
look at it right.... ;-)
