Just to chime in here (damn... I wasn't going to get into this thread) but
Kevin's on the right tact here about parental involvement.

As a former educator I can say with certainty that parental involvement, for
me, was a double edged sword.

We encouraged and enjoyed systemic parental involvement.  Those parents that
would come in and help us with projects, talk with us about spending
proposals and other issues concerning the programs.

However we dreaded reactionary parents.  Those parents that would ONLY show
up to complain whenever something they didn't like happened to their child.

In short are you really an "involved parent" if your only interaction with
your child's teacher is to complain whenever you don't like something or
when something is done that makes you feel inadequate?  Are you an "involved
parent" when your involvement advocates for your child above and to the
detriment of all others in the same class?
