I have not set up a Linux PVR but I currently have running a Windows box running SageTV dedicated in MY livingroom for "Media Center" duties. I was going to dabble with Linux MythTV but my research was that it really wasn't any more stable than the windows equivilent. Home theater is a HUGE hobby of mine. We do movie nights on the weekends and such.
http://www.htpcnews.com/forums/ The place above is a GREAT PC pvr resource. IMHO. PC's are "ALMOST" there when it comes to replacing TIVO/REPLAY. Lots of advantages with rolling your own PVR. The biggest hinderence is getting everything setup just right. I've had my box running for over a year now, its pretty stable and automatic commercial skip is GREAT. I hate watching live TV now.
