In the summer of 2001 I did quite a bit of driving around in Michigan due to
a cabin on Lake Huron and a boyfriend in Dayton. I found small-town Michigan
to be a really nice place overall and was in fact considering moving there.
I was talked out of it by a friend who had grown up on the upper peninsula
who asked me if I had any idea what the winters were like. I enquired and it
seems that in the Sault (which would be more extreme than Kalamazoo) we are
quite seriously talking sidewalks-as-tunnels at the height of winter.
Also, I have family in Detroit and you *really* don't want to live work or
shop there, really.
I don't know if these comments are helpful but that is what I can tell you
about this. If John Stanley is still on this list he may be able to tell you
more; I believe he lives near Ann Arbor. Which is supposed to be quite a
respectable university, by the way.
