I see this as a clear breech of journalistic ethics - he's become part of the story. Had he kept his mouth shut about any details regarding the investigation, then he'd still be golden, but he didn't. As to looking odd if he didn't comment, he could've said any number of inert things and been fine. If he's willing to twist ethics about this what else?
