I was able to cull this information without making it obvious to her that I 
was ring shopping. Non-chalant comments during diamond commercials, or while 
passing a diamond shop......"that ring is ugly" or "those round diamonds 
look nicer than the square ones"..etc. Then you pay attention to her 
response. Usually that's all it takes to get them going. I found out very 
quickly that i needed a white gold band, with a princess cut diamond near 
the 1c range.

That way you can surprise her, but ensure you are surprising her with 
something she'll love.
