I didn't read this as a kid, but I still loved the movie.

The effects were great. The animals and creatures were very realistic. No
exaggeration with expressions or comedy relief that is often added to animal
roles in movies.

I also agree that while some areas were dark, and a bit disturbing, they
were done in a way that is not inappropriate for most kids.

Took the boy to see it today and was truly, deeply impressed.

Hollywood, it seems, is FINALLY recognizing that you don't have to screw
around with the source material of beloved stories. The movie was
remarkably true to the book.

There were some things left out of course but only very small changes
(mostly to condense otherwise lengthy lead up material) and only very minor
additions (the only one I noticed was in the first five minutes when they
have several scenes in London).

The effects were wonderful, as you'd expect from WETA, but more importantly
(and somewhat surprising from WETA) rather subtle, even subdued, in many
places. All of the animals, for example, looked exactly as they should: no
physical anthropomorphizing was done.

I was also rather pleased in the direction as it pertained to children. The

battles were fierce and there was a strong sense of death, of pain but with
no blood or gore. Aslan's sacrifice was moving and deeply disturbing but
still appropriate for kids.

I really don't see how they could have done a better job of it. Highly
recommended (well... if you like the book).
