Both my wife and my father had their gall bladders removed withing that last few years. They just poked a few small holes in their bellies and yanked it out. Both were up and moving around within a day or two. A bit longer for my father but he's substantially older then wifey.
My wife would get really sick after eating certain things, with lots of pain and puking. To this day I cannot look at cheese nips without getting a little nauseous.
