Do you think breaking the Japanese code during WWII was also a bad thing?
You seem to think this means the government is spying on everyone in
the US. It isn't, just the known terrorist that are communicating to
people inside the US.

Also, that supports my point that over the last thirty years the
government has used this power without abusing it.
