My wife's grandfather is in the same predicament except that he quit smoking 20~30 years ago. He's known for about 6 months now and done the treatments, but they haven't been successful. He's been in the hospital now for about a week with an IV feeding him, so it seems like it's just a matter of time now.
I think her grandfather is probably older than your father-in-law, but the lesson is still true. Smoking will come back to bite you in the end.
