My friend just lost her very, very obedient 9 yr old black lab, because 
he ran away in the woods darting after something. Searching for 4 days, 
still nothing..... :-(

That said, I let Banjo (8 months labradoodle) walk off-leash at the dog 
park (not fenced in, just acres of trails) since she was 5 months or so, 
and while at the beginning, she wasn't very good at coming when she was 
called, we've never had a problem.  We've since worked on recall a lot 
and that helps.  I still feel nervous that she'll run off with some 
other dog or people.  At first, as we were walking into the park and 
others were leaving, she'd just go with them :-)  Other dogs were much 
more interesting!
