90 killed in NYE celebrations >From correspondents in San Salvador January 02, 2006 AT least 90 people were killed in Latin America in road, fireworks and other accidents during New Year's celebrations. The highest death toll was registered in El Salvador, where some 33 people were killed and another 89 injured during celebrations marking the start of 2006, officials said. Carlos Alvarado, a spokesman for the country's civil defence system, said that many of those killed and wounded from late Saturday to early Sunday were victims of gunfire. Firearms are traditionally fired at the stroke of midnight on New Year's Eve across the country. Alvarado attributed 22 of the overnight fatalities to gunfire. Thousands of Salvadorans took part in open air New Year's Eve festivities late Saturday into Sunday, including at recreational facilities and along the country's beaches. El Savador was followed by Paraguay, where 19 fatalities were reported, Guatemala with 18 casualties, Costa Rica with 15, Colombia with three, and Brazil and Mexico with one each.
