Ayup... They are up in arms about the idea that the US will start to
enforce its immigration laws... that's exactly it. Heck, it was only a
few months ago that we were hearing about proposals to give drivers
licenses to illegal immigrants. The people responsible for the
proposal had apparently not thought it through. But yeah, generally
speaking, people who've immigrated from Mexico to the US don't
particularly care that the immigration laws exist, until someone
suggests tightening enforcement of them. I suspect it's a largely
cultural thing. The same way that a Mexican builder is liable to
consider a very specific part number (including price and spec) in an
architectural diagram a mere "suggestion", I suspect they think of
laws as being merely "suggestions" about what the government thinks a
person ought to do, as opposed to a literal demand.
